ReadWriteWeb posted an article (Google's Eric Schmidt on What the Web Will Look Like in 5 Years) highlighting some bits from Eric Schmidt's (Google CEO) talk at the Gartner Symposium/ITXpo Orlando 2009. ReadWriteWeb was even kind enough to post a 6 minute excerpt that they believe would be of interest to those of us on the web:
He has some specific ideas that stand out:
- Citing Moore's Law and claiming that 5 years is a factor of ten increase in computing power, he sees far more powerful computers and broadband in excess of 100MB. This feeds his idea that TV, radio, the web (YouTube, etc.) will all become merged in some way.
- The internet will be dominated by content in Chinese (although he's silent on the future of Great Firewall of China).
- Real-time content and real-time search may further push traditional news sources to a tier below user-generated content.
- Watch today's teenagers to see how they use the web today as they will drive how employees consume content in 5 years.
